About
Taking care of our mental health is as important as brushing our teeth. Finding the right therapist can feel daunting, and it is more personal than finding the right dentist. How you feel when you first meet your new therapist is a basic guideline for a positive connection. I believe that most of the healing in therapy happens through the client/therapist relationship and trust and good rapport are keys for success. A therapeutic relationship happens when the client feels safe, heard and understood without judgment and with plenty of empathy. Through this relationship the client can learn to self-reflect, self-regulate, process deep emotions, as well as learn new ways of relating and coping when the old ways don’t seem to work any more.
My clinical focus stems from a psychodynamic theoretical approach (often referred to as insight-oriented counseling) which emphasizes the impact of past relationships on the present. In particular, I am guided by attachment-based theory which holds the position that social attachments formed in one’s early years greatly affect one’s emotional development and future relationships. I also utilize a more pragmatic thought and behavior-changing approach called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I look forward to meeting my clients where they are at and helping them reach their therapeutic goals.
Certifications and Expertise
I have had many years of training in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and hold a certificate in TFCBT. This work was done with both children and a trauma-prone adult population. I have provided Special Education therapy as well as worked one-on-one with children from mid to high range on the autism spectrum. These experiences prepared me for the challenges, and the joys, of working with clients who struggled with mental health and behavioral issues. Over time, I was exposed to a very broad range of issues from mild anxiety and depression to more severe Bipolar illnesses.
When working with couples, I primarily focus on their disparities and strengths in communication, guided by attachment-based theory and CBT. As a Positive Parenting class co-facilitator, along with my own parenting experience and a foundation in Developmental Psychology, I am well prepared to help frustrated parents contend with a myriad of parenting issues. Some of these include disciplining, parenting styles, addressing defiant behavior and sibling discord. I use a Family Systems orientation when working with “parenting issues”.
Education and Training
I obtained my B.A. degree in Developmental Psychology from UC Berkeley and a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology (MFT) from Loyola Marymount University, here in Los Angeles. In addition, I have also worked directly with students in the public school system and contracted private schools. Some of these students were from immigrant families that experienced severe trauma. Situational hardship can be mitigated and managed with old and new tools and a solid therapeutic relationship. This combination can help fortify your toolbox and assist you in navigating the anxious road of uncertainty.
